What to do:

The Nashville Gas' 57th Annual Parade - Held in December, this long-standing parade ushers in the holiday season in Nashville. Showcasing the city's rich history of musical entertainment, there are numerous floats with bands and musicians that fill the night with the magical sounds of the holiday season. The Annual City Christmas Tree Lighting celebration is held on the Public Square in conjunction with the parade and also features musical performances. The celebration concludes with a fireworks display.

There are many parades in the Nashville area, including the Hendersonville Lighted Boat parade so be sure to check all of them out!

Radio City Rockettes Nashville - The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, starring the world-famous Rockettes heads to the Grand Old Opry House on November 20 - December 27. Featuring dazzling scenery and costumes, the production features "12 Days of Christmas", "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" and the awe-inspiring "Living Nativity".

Belle Meade Plantation's "A Celebration of a Century ... 1899" - Experience a formal celebration commemorating the end of the 19th century this holiday season at the Belle Meade Plantion. This impressive mansion will be lavishly decorated in Victorian finery in honor of the holiday season.

The Belmont Mansion - The largest house museum in Tennessee and one of the few nineteenth century homes whose history revolves around the life of a women (Adelicia Hayes Franklin Acklen Cheatham), the Belmont Mansion celebrates the holidays with a variety of activities and celebrations throughout the month of December. We highly recommend the Candlelight Tour on December 17th.

Travel Tips:

On my last trip to our resort, Wyndham Vacation Resorts at Nashville, I enjoyed a wonderful "couples massage" in our villa. I arranged this ahead of time for a romantic getaway for my wedding anniversary by calling ahead to the resort and the great staff recommended massage therapists that would come directly to us in the comfort of our own villa. I set the mood once we arrived on property by picking up some items from the local Wal-Mart Supercenter such as a package of 100 votive candles, sparkling white cider and champagne flutes, fresh strawberries with a "do it yourself" chocolate dip that I made for my spouse and I to share. I also selected a CD of "spa" music to set a relaxing mood. I set up everything in advance and when the masseurs arrived it was amazing! They set up the table right in the center of the living room and we were able to enjoy a magical treat without ever leaving the comfort of our own unit. This was not only a cost effective choice compared to visiting a local spa but a romantic choice as well!

Another cost effective tip is that we traveled in the slow season in May, which the weather was amazing and mild. We wore shorts most of the time and enjoyed clear blue sky views when we went out for a day trip to visit the mountains. The local guides stated the May months are slow because it is not summer yet so the crowds are reduced. The river rafting adventure we chose only cost $30 per person because of this fact! We had a great time on a "beginners" course and our instructor was a great comedian and entertainer. He kept us on the edge of our seats in the raft, ensuring that "danger" and "peril" were around every bend of the river! It was actually very safe and I thoroughly enjoyed the laughs for the entertainment value. Our river raft guide even referred to himself jokingly as "Pastor" because he was known to baptize us tourists pretty regularly in the river.... Thankfully no one fell out of the raft and no one was "baptized" that day! We had so much fun we are looking forward to vacationing there again in May of 2010.

As I used to live in Nashville I have a couple suggestions for things to do there. They don't call it the Music City for nothing and a great place to check out some great local talent is the Bluebird Café. It's a really cool small venue where music writers for such acts as George Strait and Kenny Chesney go to unveil new songs. It set up "in the round" where three or four writers will get up on stage in a circle with a guitar and each will take turns playing a newly written song and will get feedback from the audience. Tickets are very reasonable but book ahead because it gets sold out fast.

The music experience starts when you land; there are live bands in the airport.

Plan on attending a concert at the Grand Ole Opry and take a stroll through the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. It's absolutely stunning during the December Holiday season. If you are a true country fan; plan on walking downtown. You will experience upcoming artists just singing on the streets and you can occasionally catch a glance of an "entertainer of the year". It's amazing that fans don't attack them!

I found Nashville to be one of the friendliest towns in the US; they move at a slower pace then the metropolitan east coast cities.

While in Nashville we took a day to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame. If you have several hours, taking the audio tour is the way to go. After the Country Music Hall of Fame, we took a walk down the strip and at lunch at the Wildhorse Saloon. The south is famous for fried dill pickles, so try some if you ever see them on a menu. Remember to bring some extra money to Nashville, the strip is full of stores that sell cowboy boots. You will want a souvenir, and this is a purchase you won't regret. If you are a music buff, there is a Gibson guitar store just next to the Opryland Hotel.

If you like to visit places a little off the beaten path, I would suggest the Parthenon. This is a fully replicated off of the Parthenon in Greece, but not in ruins.

If you are a historical or presidential fan, like I am, don't forget to visit the Hermitage - home of Andrew Jackson. Don't forget to take the audio tour here either.

When visiting Nashville, TN, be sure to check out the Gaylord Opryland for the most festive Holiday Cheer imaginable. The Opryland goes all out for Christmas, including an appearance by the Radio City Rockettes, and Christmas elves that will even come tuck you in at night while you are staying at the hotel, as well as amazing holiday decorations that they begin putting up months ahead of time. Whether you stay at the Opryland or just visit the location, it is definitely worth while.
