So, here is the latest. My DH was just diagnosed with Celiac Disease - an intolerance to wheat, rye and barley. We (I say "we" because being the super-fab wife that I am, this is a lifestyle change for both of us... sigh) started our "gluten free" diet last night after meeting with both his Dr. and nutritionist to find out what the scoop actually is about this whole thing.
Of course, as soon as that blood work came back and before even meeting with the nutritionist, my sweetie immediately looked up gluten-free beers online because he certainly cannot go without that! Food is one thing but BEER?! Sheesh .... Men!
Now, since the new year is upon us and I've got these new vacation days to burn, I have my fresh out of the plastic, colorful and pretty Kate Spade calendar pages to fill in with some days in the sun, mountains and fresh air!
I've already got in my head my list of things that I have to think about while I'm planning our mini-vacas and the whopper trip in the summer ... baby-friendly, beautiful and clean, cost-effective ... perhaps including the kid's grandparents ... and .... Wait! Now I have to think about diet restrictions and gluten-free restaurants too?!
We've never had to think about that kind of stuff before but now, if I want my man's insides to function properly (certainly a necessity!), it's suddenly at the TOP of our list when planning a trip.
In steps the greatest invention of all ... the internet. Just one more step on my pre-booking research and I've got a list of "safe" places that we can eat. Whew! Now, we certainly don't want to be eating out for every meal. It's not always easy to find celiac-friendly restaurants and we all know that eating out three times a day is not only a pain in the neck with a wee-one, but is also super expensive.
I'm thinking that our best bet is to try to stay in a rental property for the longer trips at the very least. Group RCI offers time-share exchanges as well as rentals and the best place to go for weekend rentals is definitely Extra Holidays by Wyndham. We can cook in our little kitchen which will help with both the diet and the wallet.
Plus, the babe passes out at 6:00 every night. Unless we are dining with AARP cards and scoring that discount, there is no reason to be eating dinner at 5:00... especially when on vacation! Dinners in our kitchen allows for the hubby and me to eat together without a fussy little one. Lunch at the local pub (with that special GF meal, of course!) is perfect and cost-effective.
So, really, with a little more effort and vigilance, we can still travel worry free, making sure that all of those needs on our "List" is met. Makes this Mom rest a little easier.
