All of a sudden, the wee one has his own opinions. Very strong opinions. With very loud noises to accompany those opinions. He hasn't put down his electric toothbrush in days, is sleeping with his plastic spoon and as soon as he gets up, signs for "more". More what you ask? Not something that I need to ask, as he is ALWAYS hungry and ALWAYS wants more.

(Though I will tell you (puffing up my chest) that he also verbally said "Thank you" when I gave him his eighth cracker with cream cheese over the weekend. Yup, he's got manners. Love it!)

So, back to the kid being opinionated and loud ... we are flying to Puerto Rico first class (Big Tip here ladies - we used fewer frequent flier miles than if we had flown out the next morning and sat in coach!) which means a 14 month old in a first class seat. Some of you are clasping your chest and wheezing at the thought of that but you need to get a grip.  Here is the thing - it's not like we're sitting in first class seats without paying or using miles. We are all in this together when it comes to air travel. You are stuck on the plane with me and I'm stuck with you. So that really wretched perfume that you bathed in this morning? It's giving me a royal headache but I don't complain. Nope, I just pull my shirtsleeve over my hand and create a little breathing tent with the fabric. I cope!!

Yes, he can be loud and I know that. I also expect it since he is a little kid - that's why I travel with toys, washable markers and lots and lots of snacks and milk. Keeping him occupied means less glares at Mommy. But - when he is cranky or uncomfortable or just plain bored, please give us traveling moms a break - we're not enjoying the flight any more than you are. Yes, it is our child but- they have their own minds, their own agendas that we can try to manipulate, but when it comes down to it, all bets are off. Ever think of trying to offer some help? Make some funny faces to help distract the upset wee one?

Although you may not enjoy flying with children, you also have no choice. So, smile, wave at them and then open your book or your laptop as well as your mind and we'll have a nice flight together. Or, if all else fails, make a new friend - offer my kid some crackers and he'll be eating out of your hand... after saying a very polite "thank you". Still not with me? Well then, bring your earplugs. It's going to be a long trip.

What do you think? Should first class seats be for adults only? Where do we draw the line? What about adult only flights? Give me your side of the story... email WOTW@wyndhamworldwide.com.
