A good friend of mine, Colleen, just got back from an eight-day business trip to England and although she had a super time, it was bittersweet because she had to leave her 16 month old at home with Dad while she was away. Though she said that it was the hardest thing that she has done (aside from giving birth), they had such a great plan in place to keep them connected that I just had to share.
So, Plan A was to set up a webcam so that Colleen and her son would get to literally see each other each day. Unfortunately, that plan fell through when the camera that Colleen brought to England didn't work properly. Luckily, there was a back up plan in place (smart girl!).
Before leaving for her trip, Coll taped herself singing the baby's favorite songs and talking to him. He was able to watch the video nightly and she proudly reported to me that he started to request the video while she was away. Seriously - doesn't that just make you have to swallow your heart picturing this little boy watching his Mommy on the TV and singing along with her?! Gets me every time that I think about it.
What a great way to stay connected with your child while traveling though! Love it. Next time (hopefully a long time from now) that I have to travel without the babe, I'll definitely do something like that. I got a Flip Video recently (in pink, naturally!) and totally love it. It's a cell phone-sized video camera that is super easy to use and has a pop-out piece that you can just plug right into your computer that then uploads the editing software and the video footage. You can even edit still-shot photos from the footage that you take. Very cool and highly recommended for you Moms and female travelers.
