My Heavy Carry-on

My little one has reactive airway disease, which is a lot like asthma for babies. He has two inhalers, a nebulizer and an airway clearance vest that attaches to a small machine. All of those necessary meds/devices translate into a very long packing list, as well as a heavy carry-on bag.

Traveling with a family member with special needs -- be it medical, physical or mental, can be difficult. When I travel with my wee one, I carry extra prescriptions for the steroid that we often use when he comes down with a bad cold since he's more prone to pneumonia, ones for the inhalers just in case I lose one or run out while we're away, and I always, always let my doctors know when we're traveling for an extended time so that if I need something while we are away, they know that I am not available to come in for an emergency office visit.

Another safety measure that I take is to check ahead to see if there are specialists in the area we're visiting that my doctor can recommend for emergency situations. Knowing what hospitals are in your vacation destination can make a huge difference in your medical situation.

We try to keep a basic baby "medical kit" packed that includes the extra prescriptions, baby Tylenol, nail clippers and a thermometer. I received great advice recently - to keep the kit stocked up and stored in our carry-on travel bag so that I always have it when we're on the road, even if it's not something that I consciously think about when packing.

Make sure that when you are packing, you don't put your kit inside the luggage that you plan to check. You can replace clothing and shoes, but if your suitcase gets lost and your meds are inside, you are just plain out of luck.

What do you keep inside your medical kit? Have any suggestions for other mothers? Send em' on over to me at WOTW@WyndhamWorldwide.com.
