Don't get me wrong for one second. I LOVE having two boys and having them so close in age. I love the new baby smell and the little peanut that watches every my every move - especially when I'm playing with his big brother. I love the little onesies and the snuggling and the adorable expressions.
I do not love never being by myself. Not alone long enough to really enjoy a hot shower. Not long enough to actually finish my beloved latte. Not long enough to finish a complete thought. Not long enough to remember who I was before having babies.
Sometimes, in order to be the best mother, the best wife and the best "you" that you can be, you need to take a break and just get back to being YOU.
So, in the final days of my maternity leave, I didn't stay at home, freaking out about going back to work or getting ready for my return. Nope. Instead, I flew to Kansas City and rocked out at a Dave Matthews Show with my best friend, Lizzie. It was AWESOME.
It was only an overnight. I sent the kids off to "school" (aka Daycare) and headed to the airport. The next afternoon, I was home and able to pick them back up. It was long enough for me to remember how spontaneous I used to be before these rigid kiddie-routines, and how easily I laugh when I'm not trying to focus on five things at once. It was heaven to be on a plane and to have time to read an entire book, all the way through. Even driving was fun - I could turn up that stereo and sing along at the top of my lungs without worrying about little eardrums or the wee one yelling "I no like that song, mommy!".
Sure, I missed my kids and my sweet husband while I was gone but I think that after four straight months of never being alone that I may have missed me more.
