My husband, his brother, his wife and I are going to Las Vegas for 3 days and will be staying right on "the Strip". I'm not a big gambler, so to me this trip needs some added "to-dos" before I can even call it a vacation.
Is there anything to do that is in close proximity to the Strip and cost conscientious other than shows? We booked a Cirque du Soleil show one evening but I have no other ideas....

All you have to do is walk the strip - most of the hotels have shows every 15 minutes. It is real exciting - they have actors doing all kinds of stunts. Mirage has the Dolphins. Excalibur has a show about Dragons, there is a light show, water show, pirate show, they last about 15 minutes.. then you can drive to lake mead or the Hoover dam,, very impressive,,short drive to the desert they have cool resturants that serves Rattlesnake, and prarie oysters... tastes like chicken,,,lol..each hotel tries to keep everyone interested to not leave check out the internet and see what free things each hotel offers...

Depends on what you like to do. As the PP said, just walking the Strip is entertainment in itself. The Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay is a pretty good aquarium http://www.mandalaybay.com/entertainment/sharkreef.aspx
The dolpins and tigers at Mirage are great. http://www.mirage.com/attractions/secret-garden.aspx If you like shopping, check out the Las Vegas Premium Outlets http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=58. Several of the casinos have roller coasters and other rides in them. This site has a pretty comprehensive list of rides and attractions: http://www.vegas.com/attractions/

You could easily spend a week in Vegas, never gamble, and NEVER be bored!!! There are shows of every type, magnificent (and extremely unique) shopping 'cities' (the word mall simply doesn't do them justice!) and all kinds of nearby side trips also.
