Taking off on the right foot.

I'm going on my first family vacation with my soon-to-be wife, her son and her parents. During the flight, I will be seated next to my wife's father. As an avid sports fanatic and politics junkie, he loves to talk 'shop' whenever he finds the opportunity. Unfortunately, I have no interest in sports and believe to share different political views. Since I don't want to offend him with any opposing opinions, what are examples of other conversational pieces that I can bring up in order to show some interest? There is about 35 years in age difference; I don't want to simply discuss the weather. Any suggestions?

  • You could talk about other places you have travelled to and visited, also ask where he has preiously been on holiday. One of the most popular dubjects with Grandads is thier grandchildren so talk to him about your fiancees son. Failing that, swap seats!! Have a lovely holiday James

  • Hello James. By now I'm sure you've completed your vacation with your soon-to-be in-laws. Let us know how the trip went and how you handled your conversation during the flight. Wishing you the best.
