All Jane Wants is a Nice Cup of Tea

Jane has recently been on a whirlwind tour of television stations across the United States. Normally a mild-mannered sort, all of this traveling has caused Jane to get a bit cranky. So, a column about one of her pet peeves seems justifiable, even during this happy holiday season.

Jane has already flushed out her thoughts on airport bathrooms in another entry. So, let's move on to the concept of the in-room coffeemaker. It's a beautiful thing...for coffee drinkers. But hey, hotel companies, what about the tea drinkers? Where are our teabags? Not only do millions of us drink tea, but even non-tea drinkers like teabags for their ability to reduce travel-induced bags under the eyes.

Jane has often found that if there is actually a teabag in the hotel coffee caddy, it's an herbal one. Herbal tea isn't even really tea, for goodness' sake. Many tea drinkers rely on their morning cuppa for their wake-up dose of caffeine. Please give us the real stuff. Furthermore, please provide something other than a Lipton teabag. No offense to Lipton, but if the coffee drinkers get Wolfgang Puck or Starbucks, surely the tea drinkers should be treated to Tazo or other notable potable brands.

Of course, even if there is a caffeinated teabag on hand, after the water has come through the coffeemaker, one's tea frequently attains a lovely plastic flavoring. What about a device that boils water without the added taste? After all, in Japan, where tea drinking is an art form, hotels have dedicated tea makers. Water is heated to just the right temperature and the tea tastes delightful. A traveler shouldn't have to travel all the way to the Far East for a decent cup of in-room tea. Tea drinkers of America, unite. Perhaps we need to create an updated version of The Boston Tea Party to make the point--this lack of real tea is quite taxing to us. Give us decent-tasting, caffeinated tea or give us liberty. Tea from Liberty of London would suffice.
