Yes, Jane knows we are in a recession. Where we are in that recession depends on which economist you ask. The glass half-full types say it will be over tomorrow, while the half-empty folks say it will be over in two years. Regardless, right now, travelers should know that the recession offers some priceless benefits.

Ponder the following:

1. As airlines look over their advance summer bookings, they are a bit worried. That means you can expect discounted fares, more frequent flyer point redemption possibilities, and last-minute sales all summer long. Plus, those fuel surcharges of summer 2008 are history, so even regular-priced tickets will seem cheaper than last year.

2. Business travelers will enjoy the fact that it's more likely airports will be less crowded, security lines shorter, and middle seats more frequently unoccupied.

3. For those traveling overseas, note that the U.S. dollar has made a year-over-year transformation that would make Charles Atlas proud. The dollar has muscled up against international currencies ranging from the Euro to the pound to the Icelandic krona to the Canadian and Australian dollars. While international travel is never cheap, this summer, thanks to international airfare deals and better exchange rates, Americans, whether traveling for business or pleasure, will be getting more bang for their bucks across the oceans.

4. Remember that gas is almost half the price it was last summer. So, traveling by car is a relatively inexpensive proposition this year, particularly on trips of less than five hours.

5. Like the airlines, destinations are concerned about low numbers. So, cities are looking for ways to add value for visitors. Although most promotions are aimed at leisure travelers, business travelers can take advantage of them as well. Visit the convention and visitor bureau or tourism office website of the city to which you are journeying and look for package deals, discounts, and coupon books.

6. For the first time in a long time, the traveler is in control this summer. Therefore, whenever possible, bargain. See if you can get a better deal at your hotel, or at least a room upgrade or added perks like free parking or meal vouchers. Those taking cruises or group tours with their family should see if an extra person can be squeezed in for free. Ask and ye might find that your requests shall be granted.
