It's that time of year again--the time of year when kids ask, "Are we there yet?" and parents repeat, "If you don't stop fighting, I'm going to turn this car around and we're going straight home."

Yep. It's time for the Great American Road Trip, the stuff of which family vacation memories are made.

We've done many family road trips since our kids were born. Some were three-hour trips to visit family. Others were multi-day, mega-mile odysseys to see large swaths of America.

No city does summer better than Chicago. After the brutal winters that keep everyone indoors and hunkered down, the warm, humid summers are a time to head outdoors, walking along the lakeshore and attending one (or many) of the city's famous (and free) festivals.
