Traveling to Florida in March is great if you want to get away from the cold Ohio weather but you also have to consider where you are planning to travel and what is happening in that part of the country. We found that out as we made it to the Wyndham Ocean Walk Resort in Daytona Florida the last day of "Bike Week" and the beginning of college spring breaks. If you are a bike fan this is the grand daddy of all motorcycle events- wonderful- so many bikes to see and hear. Personally for me, it was way too noisy.
The beaches were crowded with what my husband calls "eye candy". There were lots to look at but not many places to spread your blanket.
Wyndham Ocean Walk Resort in Daytona was well staffed and very helpful. We were given a room on the top-25th floor. The view was great up there. We could see some of the beach and the city below. At night it was spectacular. To get away from the crowds, we took a short drive to the Ponce De Leon Inlet Light Station & Museum and learned some history about the area. The lighthouse was activated for the first time November 1, 1887 and is the tallest lighthouse in Florida. The museum and buildings are very well maintained and are open to tour with 13 areas to explore.
Including the 9 steps at the entrance, there are a total of 204 steps to the top. Round and round you go!
The brick walls are 8 ft. thick at the bottom and 2 ft. thick at the top and took 3 years to build.
While staying at Star Island in Kissimmee, Fl, we took a drive to the city of Celebration. Celebration is a pleasant blend of residential areas ranging from traditional bungalows, cottages, and villages, to the more sophisticated condos, town homes, and manors. We found Market St Café in the center of town to be quant and the key lime pie wonderful along with the homemade mushroom soup. Here I am being served a piece of pie by our server Joe on the sidewalk seating. Do I really have to share? Oh so good!
Next stop was a deserted island 6 miles out in the Gulf where we dropped anchor and spent 5 hours laying on the beach and having a picnic. It was just like "Gilligan's Island".
Next was Wyndham Majestic Sun at Destin, FL. Spring was in the air. Beautiful flowers blooming everywhere.
What a great trip!
From there we made our way home through Nashville, TN. We had a one night's stay at Wyndham Nashville, but by the time we arrived there, the temperature had dropped into the 40's and was cold and rainy.
It was down-hill all the way home to Ohio. By the time we arrived at our front door, snow greeted us. All I can say is spring will be here before our next trip in May which we are already looking forward to. See you in May!! Rachel Krabill
