Being a part of the Women on Their Way's Local Nation "Sounding Board!" gave me the opportunity to do just that. After I completed treatment in Maryland, my mother and sisters in Florida were able to help me plan our Mother Daughters Weekend at the brand new Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek. The resort is absolutely gorgeous!

Upon arrival on the property we were greeted and treated like royalty from the valet to the bellmen to front desk check-in experience. We were in awe . . . the resort was brand new and had only been open less then two weeks at the time of our arrival. The interior design of the two-level lobby and color coordination was exquisite. There were so many activities to enjoy right on the property without ever leaving. There are five restaurants, lounge, outdoor cabanas, activities centers, an indoor movie theater, swimming pools, jacuzzis and much more.

Once we were escorted up to our luxury adjoining rooms, the view from our window was simply beautiful of the landscape and lagoon-style pool. We freshened up and decided to dine on seafood. We each were assigned to bring pictures we had from our childhood to dinner so we could share them. And wow were there some memories that could be considered a "Blast from the Past!" After dinner we enjoyed a fun night of exchanging gifts, laughing and catching up on old times with a pajama party. Sunday morning we had a delightful breakfast and planned for a morning of worship at a local Christian congregation near by in Kissimmee. After worshiping as a family, we had lunch and enjoyed the nearby outlet.

"What better way to celebrate the success of my health and the gift of life than with the five closest people who've known me my entire life -- my mother and my four sisters."

Thank you again Women On Their Way By Wyndham Worldwide for making it possible for my family to create memories that will last a lifetime!

After I finished my volunteer work, the next phase of my Ecuadorian adventure began. I made the Quito Howard Johnson my headquarters as my partner and I explored Quito and Otavalo. To some, the name "Howard Johnson's" conjures up images of an old-fashioned hotel and restaurant chain where you could get a homemade ice-cream and fried clams, but this is not your grandfather's Howard Johnson. In Ecuador, Howard Johnson's is a thoroughly modern establishment that competes easily with nearby four-star hotel chains and offers comfortable accommodations, full breakfast buffet, exercise facilities, and free Wi-Fi. The Quito HoJos is also well located in the La Carolina district, from which you can explore the botanical gardens or catch a trolley that goes into the heart of the Old Town, which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage site for its extraordinary Colonial architecture that dates back centuries.

After exploring Quito and availing ourselves of expertly made handicrafts in the town of Otavalo, we headed to Manta, the fishing capital of Ecuador. Although there are many reasons one might choose to visit Manta--the beaches, the seafood, or to hop aboard one of the cruise ships that have made Manta their stop--we were there for the kiteboarding. For those not familiar with the sport, kiteboarding is similar to surfing, but with a very large, inflatable kite. Your feet are attached to a board and you hold on to the kite as it harnesses the power of the wind to move you along the water. As you might imagine, you need a steady amount of powerful wind to accomplish this, and for that, Manta and the nearby kiting beach of Santa Marianita are the perfect spots. While in Manta, we stayed at another Howard Johnson's located right at the foot of Murcielago beach, making it an easy walk along the beach to several sites where we could launch our kite. After a day in the wind, water, and sand, we were also close enough to the boardwalk to shower off before enjoying a steaming hot bowl of shrimp soup at one of the many beach-front restaurants.

Tip: For a fresh and delicious seafood dinner, make sure to visit Martinica, which is an easy walk from the Howard Johnson's hotel. The staff, ambience, and mouth-watering ceviche make this restaurant a 'must' in Manta.

This was my first attempt at kiteboarding, so while I was able to learn many of the basics--such as how to set up the lines, keep the kite aloft, launching, landing, and the beginnings of how to maneuver the kite while it drags you along the water--there is still much more I need to learn. Nevertheless, I can imagine no better place than Ecuador to learn something new--all while surrounded by endless beauty, sun, and exquisite seafood.

When I first began traveling abroad many years ago, it only took a few trips for me to realize that each experience was similar to the last. Of course, the locations, language, and history changed--but there was still a thread of "sameness" to each trip that made me long for both a deeper experience and a more meaningful connection to the place that I was visiting. One year, after deciding to spend a summer abroad, I decided to try volunteering. I applied for a volunteer position in Greece and worked at a wildlife hospital caring for sick and injured animals. It was a tough and dirty job, but from then on, I was hooked.

That was six years ago, and since then I try to work a volunteer experience into every trip I take. I've taught English in Peru, worked with street children in India, and cared for disabled orphans in Vietnam. And this year I worked at a school for the disabled in Quito, Ecuador. The school, which is called El Fundacion de Ayudamos a Vivir (literally translated, it means the "Help them to Live" foundation), has about thirty students whose families bus them there each day to receive specialized care that includes schooling as well as cognitive and physical therapy. The students range in ages from 7 to 24 years and suffer from a variety of disabilities, including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, Down's syndrome, and mental retardation. Some students are highly functional physically, but not mentally--such as Francisco and Sebastian, twin boys that look like any average teenagers, but who exist in their own world. Other students are highly functional mentally, but not physically--such as Vanessa, who suffers from muscular dystrophy and cannot control her body, but who understands every word you say to her.

Each morning when I arrived at the school, I helped the students with their physical therapy, which was the area that needed the most help due to the physical nature of the job. There, I encouraged students on their stationary bicycles, helped Lisbeth with her balance on the parallel bars, and helped Vanessa with her hydrotherapy bath, which is used to help release the tightness in her back and limbs. Each day after therapy, I assisted the staff with feeding the students who are unable to feed themselves. And then after lunch, my day continued in the therapy room. I helped Lisetta with her balance, watched after frantic Andres, who continuously attempted to run off, and was the recipient of endless hugs.

Volunteering can be arduous work. Some students are difficult to manage and the language barrier could be frustrating. However, as is true of every volunteer position I have ever held, the rewards far outweighed the benefits. When I volunteer, it puts me in touch with 'real' locals who are friendly, welcoming, and eager to meet anyone who is willing to devote their time to support their work. Volunteering also gives me valuable insight into a location's people and culture that I would otherwise not obtain if I were simply sightseeing. Most importantly, volunteering provides me with an opportunity to give something back--something that runs much deeper than infusing an economy with my tourist dollars--and something that has returns that no souvenir could ever provide. For all these reasons and more, voluntourism has become my passion.

Planning a summer family vacation can be exciting and a little stressful. The good news is the planning process can be less stress and more fun by getting the entire family involved. Each of my children had the task to research a cool place they would love to visit and present at our weekly family meeting why we as a family should travel to their place of choice. The decision to travel to Houston, Texas was mutually agreed as a family.

Using our Wyndham Reward to reserve our hotel online is easy as 1, 2, 3. Travel on Southwest Airlines is affordable when we booked in advance. We enjoyed our stay at the Wingate by Wyndham. The hotel is in a great location, the staff are warm and friendly and Fun in the Sun by the poolside added to the many amenities. Each morning the kids were able to make homemade waffles in the shape of the state of Texas.

The fun family sites we experienced were:

Downtown Aquarium - We had the opportunity to see the beautiful rare White Tigers of the Maharaja's Temple, travel via train into an acrylic tunnel with live sharks swimming overhead, play games to win for big prizes and much more.

Downtown Hard Rock - After a fun morning we walked over to have lunch to the sound of music and admire stars memorabilia. The service was superb!

Space Center Houston - #1 Attraction for Family Fun! It's wonderful to read about history and science then travel to see it. The NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center Tour gave us a beyond the scenes journey. We visited and learned amazing facts about the Historic Apollo Mission Control Center. Afterwards lunch in the cafe was great! We had many choices to choose from. We ended our day watching a space film, tasting actual astronaut food and the kids getting their exercise on by playing indoor baseball, football and soccer at the Kids Space Place.

We had a blast as a family. Thank you Women On Their Way By Wyndham Worldwide for making it possible for my family to create memories that will last a lifetime!

We stayed in one of the Presidential Reserve 2 Bedroom Units on the 20th floor. What a view from up there!

We came with relaxation on our minds to sit on the beach or near the many pools and soak up the sun and read a good book or two. In the evenings we went to Pier Park which was just down the street for an assortment of excellent dinning and shopping opportunities. Then back to our balcony or to the pool to enjoy one of the many beautiful sunsets.

The beaches are not crowded this time of the year which we love. And the color of the water is so turquoise- no wonder it is called the Emerald Beaches!!

Heading home, we are thinking of 3 more vacations we have in the works for the first half of 2012 and looking forward to deciding where we want to go the last half . Planning the vacations is ALMOST as exciting as actually visiting all the wonderful Wyndham Resorts.

While visiting the WorldMark in Pismo Beach, my girlfriends and I took full advantage of the Harvest Wine Festival, which is an annual event that occurs on the third weekend of every October. The festival is a time when Paso Robles wineries invite the public to celebrate the year's harvest with fun events, including crushing, tours, barbecues, live music, and even complimentary tastings.

Our first stop was Fratelli Perata, a small, family-owned winery that typically only offers tastings by appointment, but was open for the Harvest weekend. Behind the counter was not a paid employee, but a loyal customer who had been purchasing Fratelli Perata wines for years and was well-versed in the winery's offerings, which are made up of unfiltered, artisan wines. Other memorable wineries included:

Donati Family Vineyard, which is a beautiful winery in Templeton, not far from Paso Robles. The beautiful white stucco building surrounded by lush green grass and tall cypress trees is well worth the drive just for the picture--but after you take your picture, I highly recommend you go inside for a taste of the wine. Alexis Donati, the matriarch of the winery, poured our flight herself and generously kept us fed with delicious bites from their collection of gourmet foods (which pair nicely with their wines, naturally). The Pinot Grigio was particularly lovely.

Bella Luna, which is a small estate winery that specializes in Italian varietals. The owners themselves staffed the tasting room bar and poured each taste with friendly conversation and plenty of chuckles. Bella Luna has a friendly family atmosphere and even offer wine club members free nights in the guest room on the second floor of the winery.

Adelaida Cellars, which was a little out of the way, but well worth the drive. The wines are superbly balanced and smooth from the moment it hits your palate until its lingering finish. Our tasting flights were poured by the Sales Manager himself, who generously shared with us his knowledge of the wine and their winemaking practices. I loved Adelaida so much, I joined their wine club so I could continue to enjoy their wines on a regular basis. The winery is also SIP certified, which means that they meet a standard for sustainable farming practices.

In all, we visited more than 15 wineries, savored the succulent flavor of Paso Robles grapes, and were pleasantly surprised by the personal attention every visitor received, often by the people who are directly responsible for the wines they are pouring. Many of the wineries we visited were unique in some way--most were small yield (meaning their batches of wine are in the few hundred cases, as opposed to over a thousand), and/or were unfiltered, used estate grapes, organic grapes, or produced their wine using biodynamic agricultural methods. Overall, Paso Robles wineries are unique, personal, and well worth the visit.

The weather is hot but dry. To me it was comfortable, but when you are sightseeing, you must remember to carry lots of water along with you. When we rented the jeep from Moab Adventures, they provide a large ice chest full of ice and bottled water. All we needed to do is bring along a healthy lunch and snacks.

The temperature got up to 104 degrees, but in the shade it was 10 degrees cooler and felt wonderful! This dry heat is so much nicer than the humidity we have back home at 80 degrees.

We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast in Moab- Cali Cochitta. A wonderful breakfast was served each of the three mornings we were there and we met people from all over the world.

Anytime we are in Moab, we always drive out to Dead Horse Point State Park. The views from there are spectacular as in the picture below:

We spent 4 days in the Arches area and then headed for Steamboat Springs, CO.
We stayed at the Wyndham Vacation Resorts Steamboat Springs. Again, this is another of our favorite places because the area offers summer and winter sports. We love the many hot springs that are in the area and our favorite one is the Strawberry Park Hot Spring way up in the mountains. When it is dark (there is no electricity up there), you can see more stars than I have ever seen in my life. There are many pools to choose from- some very hot to very cold.

Leaving Steamboat Springs, we traveled through Rocky Mountain National Park. It was getting late enough in the fall that we were not sure we would get to drive through the park, but the weather cooperated and we were able to see a lot of deer and elk.

We were gone a total of 21 days and as we headed back to Ohio, our thoughts returned to our family back home and was anxious to return.

Now that we are home, we are thinking about our next trip in a few weeks to Panama City Beach, FL and will welcome the warm weather as Ohio will be COLD.

Look forward to sharing again,

Recently, a few girlfriends and I spent an extended weekend in Pismo Beach, a charming ocean town on the central coast of California. At first glance, a visitor could mistake Pismo Beach for any seaside location. Several restaurant signs and menus boast their superlative "World Famous Clam Chowder," and saltwater taffy, surf, and sand art are within mere blocks of each other. However typical this may all seem, we found that this particular beach town stood out above the rest because of their food, their events, and their proximity to premium wine country.

We stayed at the WorldMark, which is ideally located near the beach and also within short walking distance to the pier, restaurants, and shopping. We happened to visit during a particularly busy weekend as both the 64th Annual Clam Festival and the Harvest Wine Weekend were in full swing, both of which are popular events with locals and came highly recommended.

Our first day in town marked the first day of the Clam Festival. Although the sun wasn't out to greet the masses, that didn't stop the surfers and clam lovers from gathering in droves. Among the activities at the Festival were a parade, surf competition, clam chowder cook-off, and lots of local vendors selling their handicrafts. As we made our way along the beach and into town for breakfast, we passed the surfers preparing for their competition and encountered the beginning rumbles of the parade as the marching bands began to practice. It was too early to sample clam chowder, however, so we ducked into Mon Ami, a popular spot for both savory and sweet crepes. This marked the beginning of food frenzy, for later that evening, we enjoyed a taste of Italy. Although many Pismo Beach restaurants came highly recommended by the locals (including Giuseppe's, Cracked Crab, and Steamers), we chose to walk a short distance out of 'restaurant row' to dine at Rosa's, a warm and inviting Italian restaurant that offered an extensive local wine list and delicious food. There, we sampled the obligatory "world famous" clam chowder (which was delicious) along with our delectable homemade pasta dishes.

With the multiple food options we had in Pismo Beach, we could have easily continued to sample the local fare, but we also wanted to check out locations in nearby Paso Robles, which is approximately 30 minutes north and in the heart of wine country. So the next evening, we visited Meritage, a wine lounge where you can taste wines from several different wineries in one location, as well as enjoy small bites that are ideal for pairing. Meritage offers live music and is a fun, relaxing way to experience the local wines or simply get in some after-hours tasting (many wineries close at 5 or 6 pm). Other notable locations in Paso Robles are Panolivos for scrumptious pastries and Artisan for an elegant evening meal.

Overall, we found Pismo Beach to be a fun location where you can experience the best of beach culture mixed with exciting events--and even some wine tasting thrown in for good measure. The food, fun, and festivities made this beach town a unique and memorable experience.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is one of those significant historical sites. It is home to one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War, but also to the famous "Gettysburg Address" in which President Abraham Lincoln declared a "new birth of freedom" in the United States. 2011 marks the Gettysburg 150 events which strive to encourage the legacy that the Gettysburg battle provided in changing the direction of the Civil War.

Gettysburg is also home to one of the premier Wyndham Hotels & Resorts properties. The Presidential flair of this hotel is apparent as soon as you set foot in the hotels expansive lobby. Throughout the hotel there are many framed pictures of significant people and events from the Civil War days. Even the hallways are decorated in an official looking United States seal carpeting. The decor spilled out into the restaurants and nearby theater surrounding the Wyndham Gettysburg.

The Friday evening I arrived was festive in downtown Gettysburg thanks to First Friday events. I was greeted to a live salsa band and dancers as well as complimentary cheese, fruit and wine at the downtown shops. The shops offer everything from local gourmet goodies to historical replicas of items popular during the Civil War era.

While visiting Gettysburg I began my historical journey at the National Military Park and walked through their extensive Museum before visiting the sites of epic battles on the auto tour. I was overwhelmed at the thorough explanation of the battle sites and how well the artifacts and land were preserved. During the auto tour, I ate lunch at the Dobbin House, which I recommend for its local historical value and scrumptious bites.

Back at the resort complex, I dined at the Old Eagle Grill where I feasted on some fall-off-the-bone, bbq smothered, ribs. A group of men in the at table had recommended them, and I appreciated the tip. Right next door the grill, was a movie theater! The Gateway Theater features the "Fields of Freedom" movie which details the battle of Gettysburg in addition to box office films.

On Sunday morning, after checking out, I dined at the 1863 Restaurant and feasted on a traditional Adams County breakfast. Can anyone say scrapple? mmmm! Our waitstaff and bellhop were extremely polite and helpful. I was sad to leave the comfortable amenities of the Wyndham Gettysburg. The resort has even been selected to host the 2013 Congressional Medal of Honor Convention, a very distinguished honor.

I was fortunate enough to enjoy a beautiful fall weekend in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, but other patrons may want to allow more time to thoroughly explore the battlegrounds and other historical sights in Gettysburg. I am told that one should never miss one of the famous ghost tours! Wyndham Gettysburg was a modern and comfortable stay within one of the nations most memorable and historical areas.

We stayed 3 days at the Wyndham Durango. Durango is known for the Narrow Gage Railroad that travels from Durango to Silverton carrying passengers back in time to a small gold mining town of yesteryear. We did not take the trip this year but have many times in the past.

Every time we get to Durango we have to take in the Durango Melodrama and Vaudeville act at the Henry Strater Theatre. It is well worth the evening.

Four wheeling was such a blast of fun! We rented a jeep this year as we no longer have our own 4-wheeling vehicle. This year the mountains were still very green and the flowers were still blooming. It is hard to describe the grandeur and magnificent views up in the mountains. Pictures cannot do justice to actually seeing it for yourselves. If you ever get the chance to see the mountains- go do it. That's my car mirror in the corner of the picture.

It had rained early in the morning and parts of the road were wet. No guard rails up here! But the scenery is well worth the trip. What a view!

It so hard to describe the thrill of 4-wheeling if you have never done it. If you are not experienced in handling a 4-wheel drive vehicle, my suggestion is to go on many of the guided tours that are offered. You will still enjoy your trip and they do the driving and you can enjoy the view.

Next segment is 4-wheeling in Utah. Hope you can join me again for part 3. See you soon! Happy Traveling! Rachel

Whenever my husband and I are planning a car trip, we usually can not sleep the night before we leave. Nothing was different this time. We got up at 3AM and were out the door by 4AM with a cup of coffee in hand, excited for our new adventure.

It was lunch time the second day out and we stopped in Lexington, KS at The Victorian Peddler for lunch. What a pleasant and refreshing lunch of chicken salad and two kinds of melon- delicious! Across the street was a cute restored building with the name
Alexander Mitchel on the window. This building was a banking company and was robbed in 1866 by Jesse James in broad daylight; he got away with $2,000. Today it is a cute gift shop.

We stopped for the night at theTopeka Ramada. This Ramada won Ramada Best of 2010 Hotel Award Winner and the #1 Premier Downtown Topeka Hotel. This is one of Wyndham Worldwide's franchised hotels and was very clean and the staff was pleasant. Breakfast was way more than we expected and very good.

All but 4 of the 21 days we were on this trip we spent our nights at Wyndham Worldwide affiliated timeshare and hotel properties, thanks to the 200,000 Wyndham Rewards points I won from the Women on Their Way Local Nation contest - thanks Women on Their Way! Most of the meals we ate were taken off of the American Express gift cards that were also part of the prize package. What a deal!

Traveling along the Santa Fe Trail, we came upon Bent's Old Fort and made time to take a tour. The adobe fort has been completely reconstructed and costume-clad guides lead you on very interesting tours. One of the commander's quarters was once occupied by frontiersman Kit Carson.

Bent's Old Fort is located on Hwy 194,
8 miles east of La Junta, CO and 15 miles west of Las Animas, CO.

We celebrated my birthday in Taos, NM. We visited the Taos Pueblo - interesting place. I had to pay to take pictures inside the pueblo but it was worth it. There are about 150 Native Americans currently living at the pueblos, but most of them have other homes in Taos where they shower and do their laundry. They use the pueblo mainly for festivals and some have shops where they sell items they make.

When you are touring by car, you see so many more things than by flying. While driving from Taos, NM to Pagosa Springs, CO, we came upon some very interesting houses; ones that I would call weird. We found out they are made from junk, (old tires, glass bottles, aluminum cans) just about anything. They were called "earthships". This concept is the brainchild of Michael Reynolds. There is a whole community of strange-looking houses near Taos, NM.

We made it to Wyndham Pagosa in Pagosa Springs, CO and were checked in quickly. We spent 3 days at Pagosa Springs, hiking to places like Wolf Creek Pass to Treasure Falls and also took the Plumtaw-Piedra Loop driving tour, a 35 mile loop up in the mountains and back.

Join us on our next leg of the trip to 4-wheeling in the Colorado Mountains near Silverton. Keep an eye out for my next blog.

Until then travel safely.

Want a quiet place that has both beach and pools? A place to sit back and relax, read a good book, spend quality time with family? Well, Edisto Island in South Carolina is the place for you.

My daughter Jennifer and her family and my husband and I spent a leisurely week at Edisto Island in South Carolina. In July it is HOT, HOT, HOT, and did I mention Humid? But there is the ocean where there is always a breeze and lots of pools to keep you cool.

Here are my twin grandchildren enjoying one of the pools with their dad.

The Wyndham Ocean Ridge Resort at Edisto Island is a campus-like resort. My suggestion if you have children or grandchildren is to try and get a condo near one of the pools. The resort has a shuttle that will pick you up at your door and take you to the beach and back if you call early and get on their schedule.

We did a lot of cooking in while at Wyndham Ocean Ridge Resort. There is one grocery store on the island which is well stocked and very busy. The kitchen is also well stocked. Just a tip- when you first arrive, check your kitchen for missing items. We had some pots and pans missing and were replaced very quickly when you bring it to their attention. We also wanted to do some grilling and Wyndham provides charcoal grills within an easy walk of your condo just for that purpose.

There are also plenty of restaurants on the island to choose from so you are not about to go hungry.

Besides being very hot and humid, this vacation met all our needs for the week of family time together.

We just returned from a much needed spring break. The winter months in Chicago had worn us down - it evened snowed the day we left (in late April!) - and we were all in dire need of sunshine. A quick flight to Miami followed by an even quicker flight to the big island of the Bahamas was all it took to get us out of our winter rut. Our resort of choice, the Wyndham Viva Fortuna Beach was just right: the beautiful ocean view, the spotless, white sand beach, and the crystal clear, warm Bahamian waters were all we needed to enjoy some uninterrupted family together time.

The resort had a wide range of fun activities that appealed to all the members of our family: Our 10 year old son took advantage of the ping-pong tables, the giant chess set, air hockey, and the fun resort staff encouraged him to take part in everything from dart tournaments to pool diving. Our daughter, who is 18 months, couldn't get enough of the gated toddler appropriate park and the just-right baby pool. Mommy and Daddy enjoyed having a drink on our patio overlooking the ocean and the starlit sky after the kids went to bed. More than anything, we all enjoyed the beach, where we swam, snorkeled, and built sandcastles, and the pool, where Chiara swam around in a toddler raft while the rest of us splashed around or played Marco Polo.

This was our first-time-ever staying at an all-inclusive resort, and let me tell you, it will be hard to go back to traditional non-inclusive hotel stays. All activities, food and drinks were included in our stay. There was a wide selection of healthy foods (and of course, treats for dessert!) at a serve yourself buffet that made it easy to quickly choose a meal so we could all simply sit down and enjoy. Booster seats and highchairs were always on hand. Since we didn't have to wait around for servers, we were able to eat and go enjoy the rest of the day. Not having to carry a purse/wallet around everywhere and not having to haggle over bills was priceless. We did choose to dine for two evenings at the on-site Italian restaurant, Cafe' Viva, where we savoured the brick-oven fired pizzas (and we're an Italian-American family, so we're picky when it comes to pizza!). The beach cafe' served snack fare and drinks, ideal for soothing after-swim hunger pains.

Among the more unforgettable moments: watching our daughter dip her toes into the ocean for the very first time: she squealed with delight and would have dived right into the waves had we not stopped her, and scuba diving with my boy: he was Jr. certified at the PADI 4* dive center located right at the resort and we did a 15 ft. dive together as buddies.
Our family gives our trip to the Bahamas a 4 star rating - in fact, we wish we could have extended our five-day vacation by at least a couple of days. The stress-free, all-inclusive resort concept and the wide range of on-site activities freed up our schedule, allowing us to spend more time having fun together as a family, making for a priceless spring break vacation.

- Amy Bocchetta is a teacher, a writer, and a mom.
My husband Jerry and I stayed at Marsh Point at the Wyndham Ocean Ridge Resort. Our unit was an older unit but we really enjoyed it.

The unit was clean, well maintained, and just what we needed for the week.
We came here to check out the area where we are bringing our family in July of this year for a week's vacation.

The area is GREAT for biking.

The trails are well maintained and easy to ride. You can ride anywhere on the island. There are even bike paths along the roads for easy biking.

Very bike Friendly!

The swimming pool right outside our condo was an all-weather pool for winter or summer.

The weather was in the 80's the whole week we were there. It was GREAT!

Edisto Beach State Park offers the state's longest system of handicapped-friendly hiking and biking trails, including one leading to a mysterious 4,000- year old midden alongside a secluded bend on a tidal creek.

This bank was all shells. Come check it out!!!

There are many great restaurants on the island- lots of places to eat outside and enjoy the weather- Top picture is at "Sea Cow Eatery"

Bottom picture is at Plantation Grille right at Wyndham Ocean Ridge Resort overlooking the golf course.

The food was very good and reasonable.

The beaches on Edisto Island are noted for being a favorite nesting ground for Loggerhead Turtles. On Edisto, hatching occurs from July through October.
Maybe when we come back in July, we will be lucky to see some hatching.

While we were there in May, the beaches were not crowded and you had lots of room to roam freely. The weather was warm and breezy.

We are coming back in July and bringing our family!

Watch for my next post! What a relaxing vacation!

While most people have heard of a Bar Mitzvah, which is held when a Jewish boy turns thirteen, not everyone is familiar with its female equivalent. The two celebrations are similar in that they both commemorate a Jewish youth's 'coming of age' that signifies that the boy or girl is old enough to accept the commandments and abide by Jewish law. However, in the Orthodox community, a Bat Mitzvah is often celebrated when a girl turns the age of twelve and does not include the traditional reading of the Torah.

In terms of the event itself, a Bat Mitzvah celebration is like a birthday and wedding reception rolled into one. As we entered the reception room of the family's synagogue, Tiferet--who looked radiant in a dress of turquoise lace--posed for professional photographs with her family. Meanwhile, the caterers busily arranged a large spread of food upon the tables. As the guests began filtering in, they signed a guest book and began to mingle, eventually seating themselves to enjoy the delicious kosher meal to a backdrop of traditional Israeli music. After the feasting, the guests were treated to a selection of both modern and classical piano music played by the Bat Mitzvah girl herself, who had practiced for months for this occasion. Soon thereafter, the dancing began.

After all of the festivities, the entire family retired to their home to relax and watch as Tiferet opened her gifts. You might be wondering what's appropriate to give at a Bat Mitzvah (I know I did!). As it happens, the type of gift you give depends on the recipient's individual tastes and isn't unlike what you might choose for a special birthday. For myself, I gave a gift of a silver charm necklace, which turned out to be one of many pieces of jewelry that the girl-of-the-hour received (so I think it's safe to say that jewelry is a safe bet). Other great ideas include books, journals, religious items, and money. Several web sites suggest that when gifting money, make it in increments of 18 because this is the numerical equivalent to the Hebrew word for "life."

From my view, "life" was an operative word for this occasion, for it seemed to me that the Bat Mitzvah was more than an acceptance of the commandments, but also a jubilant celebration of life--the life of the young girl or boy, as well as the life and longevity of the tradition. I can't imagine there being a better place than Israel to experience this part of Jewish tradition and I feel honored to have been a part of it.
